I retired from the Ontario Public Service and was looking for ways to volunteer in the community. In 2020 a member of the original board of CAFFI Housing, who was also a member at Christ Church Bolton, approached me about joining the board.
I organize the Spring and Fall Clean ups at Shiloh House which help to ensure that the outside of the property is ready for use after the winter and is also ready for the winter. In addition, I act as a liaison holding periodic house meetings to ensure effective communication amongst the occupants. I also act as a back-up to the Treasurer. This involves reviewing and co-signing expenditures.
In late 2018 I saw an appeal in the Holy Family Church bulletin asking for someone to volunteer to help with the accounting for CAFFI Housing, an organization I was not familiar with. I responded to the ad and soon thereafter became the “bookkeeper”. By late January 2019, we had set up a bank account and were up to 6 Directors. The Board proceeded to create and review a number of documents and procedures that would be needed to get the house up and running. We had a lot to learn about “Home Sharing”, banking for a small not-for-profit organization, fundraising, etc. The most important concept to understand was giving adults with “intellectual disabilities” a chance to experience more independent living than would be available with their parents or in a government group home. 7 ½ years later, the project is still evolving, and I’m still learning. If anyone reading these bios thinks they would like to be involved, please say “yes” to that call. More help is always welcome!
My family has had a long-standing relationship with Holy Family Parish since we moved here to Bolton in 2009 which is how Patricia came to know me. In early 2026 Patricia reached out to me and asked if I would like to join CAFFI Housing as a Board Director. Since joining the Board, I have assisted with fundraising efforts and being a younger member, I have brought the online website up to date thanks to collaboration my fellow Board members on new information and events, as well as help bring those events to the light of the community online. I hope I can continue to build quality relationships with the current Board, assist with new membership, as well as maintain positive interactions with home sharing members and the community who keep CAFFI House what it has become and what will be.
